Given that it has been seventy years since a new Monarch has been acclaimed in the United Kingdom, many were not familiar with the practice of the Sovereign choosing a Regnal name, the name under which he or she will be known. That is, of course, until they watched “The Crown” on Netflix, when viewers were let in on the scene when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II chose to “not overcomplicated things, my name is Elizabeth.” This broke with tradition as her father Albert chose George VI, her uncle David chose Edward VIII, and her grandfather chose George V.

Today’s modern technology and social media – there are few that don’t know of HRH William, Prince of Wales and his son, HRH Prince George of Wales. We know them as “William,” and “George,” just as we have known The King as “Charles” for 73 years.

With The King choosing to go by his given name – the era of regnal names differing from given names is now likely a part of history which will one day record the names of His Majesty King William V and His Majesty King George VII.
